That’s the question that is fired out in most interviews. Sometimes it gets jazzed up, for example “Who would you most like to work with?” but the essence of the question is the same.

That’s the question that is fired out in most interviews. Sometimes it gets jazzed up, for example “Who would you most like to work with?” but the essence of the question is the same.

I think on it for a minute and then the usual answers come out..

“Male… I’d have to say Marvin Gaye or Stevie Wonder… And Female… Aaliyah”.
And it’s at this point I’m usually met with a blank stare, followed by the statement “Aaliyah? Really??”

Yes, REALLY.

Let’s skip past the formulaic R. Kelly offerings of “Back’n’Forth”, “Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number” etc..

The Aaliyah we know and now miss came into existence when she teamed up with Missy Elliott and Timbaland, in my opinion. It was a partnership on the same scale as that of Jam and Lewis working with Janet Jackson. They didn’t just come up with songs or grooves; they came with a style unique to the artist, which is what all great teams deliver.

Like Janet, her voice wasn’t the strongest or most powerful. So why was she – why is she still to this day my favourite?

Because she had control of her voice, she knew exactly what she could and couldn’t do. She trusted her production team enough to let them guide her and deliver what was needed for each song.

She was a singer in the true sense of the word in that she was able to lay a vocal on the song, deliver what the production required and still transmit an emotion.

I often tell artists that I’m working with, especially when recording vocals, that there is a huge difference between a great vocalist and a great singer.

A vocalist is technically correct, able to hit any note and pretty much do whatever he or she wants over the tune. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t, but they seldom pay any attention to the overall result. They focus more on their performance and their voice.

A good singer will focus purely on delivering what is required for the song.

What made Aaliyah a great singer in my eyes is that she sat on every track she did from the Missy and Timbalandphase onwards effortlessly, and in order to do that you have to be brave enough to know what works for you and what doesn’t. You have to be able to let go of your ego.

At the end of the day, if you were asked to sing an Aaliyah riff could you think of one straightaway? Is there a trademark? I don’t think there is, but you can sing along with all her tunes. And that’s what great singers do; they make you feel.

aaliyah are you that somebody

But it wasn’t just her vocals and music. In a time now where a percentage of female artists now define their sexual attraction by how much camel-toe they can get away with showing in a video (yes, I took it there), Aaliyah was sexy in the classic sense of the word.

She was sexy in the way she dressed and carried he self. The focus of her beauty was not plunging necklines, the size of her backside or how little she wore in her videos. It came from her confidence and how she carried herself. She could literally melt you or get your engine running with just a smile and a wink.

She carried the same style and poise into her dancing, but you could tell that when she had to throw a routine down that this was a woman who was just as comfortable busting a move in a pair of trainers.

She had started making the successful transition into acting and like her music, was picking roles where she could deliver and wasn’t showing herself up.

She conducted herself in a classy way, but you can also tell from interviews and behind the scenes footage she was also enjoying life.

The real shame about her passing is that I believe she was at a point when everything was coming together and she was stepping into her own lane. Every album was showing a progression and, along with the acting and her maturing, she was becoming… well let’s just say, if she was still here Destiny’s Child may not have been so quick to disband for a while. I don’t think there would have been a gap in the market for certain artists to step into. But that’s just my opinion.

It’s a real shame from a personal opinion that she’s gone, as the possibility of working with her often kept me going. I’ve been blessed with working and becoming friends with many people I look up to and admire so it wasn’t an impossible idea in my eyes.

The bigger shame is that we’ll never see what she would’ve have become – and a true class act has now been missing from the game for nine years.

RIP Aaliyah.. You are so missed xx

American R&B star, Babyface will tour South Africa in September 2010. The popular singer and record producer will perform at Durban’s Inkosi Albert Luthuli (ICC) on September 17, Sedibeng’s Dickinson Park on September 19, Mogale City’s Coronation Park on September 24 and Jozi’s Sandton Convention Centre on September 26. Tour organisers say the star, whose real name is Kenneth Brian Edmonds, is coming as a replacement for fellow US R&B singer, Brandy. Rampa Masoko of Khalipha Entertainment says they had to replace Brandy because she had already been booked to take part in a US reality show, Dancing With The Stars. Some SA music fans say they are “not really excited about Babyface’s tour because he also cancelled his SA performances at the eleventh hour last year .” “I’ll believe it when I see him in South Africa,” says a music fan who was disappointed last year. The tour will be supported by a host of local singers including Lira Ntando, Robbie Malinga, Theo Kgosinkwe, Big Nuz, DJ Tira and DJ Siyanda.

Robert Wilson (1957-2010)

When Robert Wilson took the call from keyboardist Billy Preston inviting him on a short tour, the then-19-year-old bassist hesitated—not because he didn’t want the gig, but because he had to clear it with his mom first. “She told me I couldn’t leave because I had other responsibilities that weekend,” says Wilson. “But I had to set her straight. The next day I was onstage at the Spectrum in Philadelphia, sharing the bill with Larry Graham, the Whispers, and Blue Magic.” It was the mid ’70s, and word was spreading quickly about Robert, whom Preston contacted through Tulsa, Oklahoma session great Leon Russell. Robert, his older brothers Charlie and Ronnie, and the rest of the Greenwood, Archer & Pine Streets Band—they would soon shorten the name to the more marquee-friendly “GAP” Band—had been discovered by Russell at a Tulsa night spot. “Leon heard us one night and snatched up the whole band,” explains Wilson. “He basically removed his band and installed us. ” The Gap Band really took off when the Wilson brothers moved to Los Angeles, pared down to a three-piece core, and hooked up with producer Lonnie Simmons. 1979’s “Shake” was the first of several high-energy, synth- and bass-heavy party anthems, followed by “Burn Rubber (Why You Wanna Hurt Me Bad)” and the oft-sampled “You Dropped a Bomb on Me.” Today the Gap Band still brings the party to packed houses worldwide, and the group was recently honored with this year’s BMI Icon Award for their “enduring influence on generations of music makers.” At the root of the group’s influential style lies Robert’s vivacious bass work, which anchors the band’s groove and provides the foundation for his brother Charlie’s synth-bass parts. “I go for a sound that’s warm but still has enough guts to cut through,” explains Robert. “I put my parts down and Charlie comes behind me. Whatever the lick, he doubles it. He’ll cut some breaks here and there, but his parts basically follow mine.” Restraint is a key ingredient in Robert’s groove recipe. “I don’t like players whose main goal is to show that they’re technical wizards. Bass is all about creating a mood.” When crafting his parts, Robert—who developed his bass chops in church bands—often appeals to a higher source. “I connect with the spirit and let it take over,” he says. “If you think too much about your next lick, you won’t be able to find its spirit. I try to take my mind out of it.” Sometimes, however, his inspiration has more earthly origins. “I always wanted to play lead guitar,” says Robert, “so I’ll play the lead licks that I hear in my head. As long as you leave the bottom on the one, you can be more aggressive on beats two and four. You just have to know how to get back to the one. That way you can keep your licks in perspective.

The 14-track album sounds like it was released hurriedly, and lacks the magical touch that put the DJ on the map a few years ago. Even contributions from noteworthy artists such as DJ Cleo, Bleksem, Bantu Soul, Rokboys, Jerah, Mpho Maboi and Professor fail to save the album.

On this edition, Clock generally takes a break from his trademark synthesizer sound and settles for a percussion-oriented sound, while also experimenting with various effects, filters, phasers and reverb. The result: a flawed yet sincere effort to keep clubbers on the dance floor.

The album opens with a rather annoying track titled “Uthixo Undile Amandla”, featuring Thabo Mollo. It’s one of those tracks that leave you with no option but to push the ‘next’ button early. The second track, “Uyang’tola”, sounds much better – thanks to a contribution by popular R&B and soul singer Bantu Soul. The only concern on this one, however, is that it is a bit monotonous, as Clock builds it on a bass riff that plays all the way to the last second. Mpho Maboi comes in on the track “Femme Fatale”. It’s a decent rump shaker that could have been a hit; alas, it lacks the hungriness of a dance floor pusher.

DJ Cleo and Bleksem feature on the track “Bayang’sukela”- a lukewarm effort made more appealing by the pair’s catchy verses and choruses.

A standout track on the album is arguably “Ngomso”- here the DJ really redeems himself. It’s simple, hypnotic and mildly entertaining- a quality that can be attributed to Clock and his vocalist, Shisaboy. Clock’s collaboration with Jerah, “Colours of Sunset”, is also remarkable. The DJ’s decision to end the album with a hip hop song, “Party Mood”, is a terrible mistake – he really kills the house vibe with this one.

Take this: While this album fails to meet the standards of the DJ’s previous efforts, it’s not a terrible album at all. Decent tracks such as “D N’ B beat”, “Oyedwa”, “Bayang’sukela”, “Distortion” and “Uyang’tola” will probably keep the DJ afloat for a while.

Cover/Art: 2.5/5 | Sound/Technical: 3.5/5 | “I like it factor”: 6.5/10/

It has taken a good two months and a few days, to compile this work this time around. I must say, it is always a challenging process of searching far and wide for good quality tracks for weeks on end, and might I add during unsociable hours too. The job doesn’t end there, once you have your tunes, you have to sieve through and find the ones you can work with, discarding or keeping some if you lucky, for the next instalment. It is an enjoyable process on the whole.

To all those who have passed through, left their feedback and downloaded the mixtapes to share with others, we salute you! Thank you all for the support, it makes all our efforts to keep Soul Music alive all worthwhile.

It’s an absolute pleasure working with the gents @ the Ave, Kelvin Soul, Mujay, Swift T and off course the Guests, Don, Mixsensei, Dean, Soulthane, Kimble, Sammy T and the Candyman. Keep it rocking!!!

Now, onto the next project…….! Enjoy our latest offerings.
