As an exclusive tribute to super producer Jay “Dilla” Yancey, Jazz Café is proud to present a full live show involving the cream of the Detroit soul & hip-hop underground. The performance will featuring original “Welcome to Detroit” era session band members plus a raft of MC’s who’ve graced dilla beats over the years.
After quietly serving as a member of A Tribe Called Quest’s production team, the Ummah, and scoring hits for Busta Rhymes, De La Soul and Pharcyde, Detroit producer Jay Dee became known as a major hip-hop prospect by the late 90s. The hip-hop community took notice of his no-frills, breakbeat-heavy hip-hop style as he helped craft albums for Common (Like Water for Chocolate), Q Tip (Amplified), and the debut for his own group Slum Village (Fan-Tas-Tic Vol. 1). Jay Dee was recognized by fans and music a like as one of hip-hop’s most admired and desired producers around.
This event will be especially poignant as Dilla performed his last London live gig on the hallowed jazz café stage in 2005. Thankfully the Jay Dee legacy lives on via unearthed beats, tribute’s and new recording’s such as the recently announced ‘Rebirth of Detroit”. The album, which features unheard dilla productions is compiled by Maureen ‘Ma Dukes’ Yancey and aim’s to promote “unity within the city’s hip hop” community. Dilla’s work will be complemented by material from Detroit artists who collaborated with the producer in the past. Yancey says: “This will bring together artists that have drifted away from one another and haven’t been able to work with each other lately… It’s a healing process for the city… for individuals it’s going to bring back the love passion and the passion for the music and for what hip-hop has to offer… hip-hop is a culture, it’s not a passing fancy. It’s thriving and growing, in a wonderful way. It has a positive message and learning experience for all ages”.
