First and foremost the thing I would like to point out is I am not a DJ, rather a passionate enthusiast who has had Soul & R N B at the centre of my entertainment and almost as an obsession. I think for the first time this mixtape will go a long way in justifying to my wife all the countless hours and money spent on my music. As much as they have been a lot of people along my music journey that have made an impact, few stand out and some of you will have no clue about it. Douglas Nyikayaramba, the man who introduced me to Soul music back in High School (Marondera & Prince Edward). Simbarashe Mageza & Max Mukwasi, I have always been musically in sync with these dudes. George Munetsi, the DJ that had a knack for the rarest of grooves, Mr Mujay for the soul & ghetto swagger and collectively Musiq Ave, popping up right at the moment were some of us were feeling like dinosaurs, at that time when every night you went out you’d go home lamenting the death of good music (talking about it made you feel really old) and whether there was any chance that golden era in music would ever be revived. So this mixtape is my way of paying homage to the people that made me love the music, because ultimately the magical memories created by that music were because of the soul of the people that made me love the music. If you happen to love the music then more Soul to you. Hope you enjoy the mixtape!!

It’s funny how inspiration requires just an open mind and dosage of soul music especially on a Saturday morning. After listening to a couple of mixes from my good friends @ MusiqAve.com I asked myself 1 question. What would a mixtape with tracks compiled by DJ Mujay, DJ Dean & Mista Cee together sound like? I immediately started going through my library putting tracks aside into playlists. I remember even sampling “untitled” tracks (u know the ones you have but don’t know the artist..lol). After days of searching and sampling I realised that I was on a “Mission Impossible.” There was no way of even beginning to put together what these three great minds know. I therefore decided to settle for making a mix that they could at least pop in their decks and listen to without fast-forwarding. Ladies and gentlemen I’m your Warden DJ DOLLA and am glad to present to you “SOULitary CONFINEMENT”- God-willing my first in a series of installments to be delivered through this wonderful street – MusiqAve.com…Peace & Love.

<itunes:summary>Itrsquo;s funny how inspiration requires just an open mind and dosage of soul music especially on a Saturday morning. After listening to a couple of mixes from my good friends @ MusiqAve.com I asked myself 1 question. What would a mixtape with tracks compiled by DJ Mujay, DJ Dean #38; Mista Cee together sound like?nbsp; I immediately started going through my library putting tracks aside into playlists. I remember even sampling ldquo;untitledrdquo; tracks (u know the ones you have but donrsquo;t know the artist..lol). After days of searching and sampling I realised that I was on a ldquo;Mission Impossible.rdquo;nbsp; There was no way of even beginning to put together what these three great minds know. I therefore decided to settle for making a mix that they could at least pop in their decks and listen to without fast-forwarding. Ladies and gentlemen Irsquo;m your Warden DJ DOLLA and am glad to present to you ldquo;SOULitary CONFINEMENTrdquo;- God-willing my first in a series of installments to be delivered through this wonderful street - MusiqAve.comhellip;Peace #38; Love.

This mix was born out of pub discussion with two differing generations. The question was asked which music was better 80z or 90z, and all hell broke loose lol…

For me 80z and 90z affected me in different aspects of my life:

[80z] As you well know from my previous mix, my teenage years was during the 80z era, where music was focal in one’s life. Yes that 80z era takes me back to a NOSTALGIC time when you felt SAFE, when you had a few cents in your pocket yet the entertainment lasted longer than 100 times its value today, when you experienced your first love and your first break up, when the worst you would get was a blue eye from a fight, and when you heard that song on Radio or the hottest club in town for the very first time; it turned your world upside down. Moreover, the song ‘You gave your love to me’ by Chude that I have mixed on the 80z side has and will always be a favourite of mine. Not many people know that the tune was actually arranged, mixed and produced in Zimbabwe!!! I found this out recently when I interviewed Chude Mondlane the lead singer, who is actually half Mozambiquen, half American, having lived in Zimbabwe during war times in Mozambique. What a wonderful lady she is, modest, intelligent and a real stand up person.

[90z] The 90z reminds me off a time away from home as a young adult in a foreign land. Struggling with no money, a sponge for higher learning, learning life lessons the hard way and making it on your own; lots of drama yet finding solace through music. The first time I went to concerts and had access to those singers that I loved, and then buying the CD (yes it was a milestone that you could afford a CD) afterwards and listening to those tunes on the ‘tube’ in a world of your own, that you even missed your stop.

I guess I haven’t answered the question the way you wanted me to, I don’t think a scientific analysis would give you the answer; it’s really something personal which is influenced by the generational divide.

I have put a mix together and let you be the judge!

Hitman Bio

I started DJing at the tender age of 12 in Northampton UK, at the Leaver’s Dance at Emmanuel Middle School, which I attended. I was inspired by Tony Blackburn, and I knew from this early age that I was destined to be on radio.

During my time in Northampton I also attended the Interlink Youth Club from 1980-1982 at the Weston Favell Centre. We used to enjoy jamming the Space Invaders, boxing, bible study, table tennis, badminton and had our very own disco. I used to play New Wave, Funk, Rap, Reggae back then. We would toast on the microphone with friends including King Sounds’ son “Robert Plummer”. Not only did I have a keen interest in music but also for boxing, and was crowned 3 Counties under 16, boxing champ during my time at the centre.

I returned to Zimbabwe December 1982 and used to toast at the Ydub Centre, before moving to Mutare were I used to DJ at schools, hotels and so forth with Greg Maurice and the Ojays Disco. I went into boarding school when the family moved back to UK. I still remember distinctly the chilling moment when my former headmaster caught me climbing over the school hostel gate at 9pm. I told him “Sir, you know I am a DJ, I am going to work”, he laughed and let me go.

Back then I used to go by the Jah Hosea. Special thanks go to my younger brother Charlton, who used to send me 12 inch records, when the family moved back to the UK.

In 1985, while driving from a gig in Masvingo I told Fred Zindi, I was going to change my name from “Jah” Hosea to “The Hitman”, because I wanted to establish myself in Harare and also because I was an eclectic DJ.

I started off playing at Liz hotel with Tommy Dutch and then moved to Bretts. I went on to join ZBC Radio One in 1986 and shared the same office with Kelvin Soul Supreme and Daniel McKenzie. I asked to be moved to the more youth oriented station FM 3 and this move happened in 1989.

I have played at Circus and various night clubs, community halls and school gigs in and around Harare and also toured the whole of Zimbabwe. I have had mad love from people of different colours and tribes. I have mentored many a DJ including Tony D and helped my peers improve their skills both on radio and live gigs.

I am now resident in Malawi and proud to have assisted in establishing Malawi’s first private radio station FM 101 Power after rocking Pamuzinda in Zimbabwe.

I love Martial Arts and have been doing Tai Chi since 1992. I have had my ups and downs, been through the furnace, but like a lion I am up and roaring again! My totem is Shumba Charumbira Sipambi, I hate racism and tribalism, love all Zimbabweans.

You can catch me on Superfly each and every Sunday from 1.15pm – 4.oopm for some great nostalgia as i bring you the best in Old Skool.

On my 80z club mix vol1, MixSensei promised to follow up on his next mix (80z club mix vol 3) with Lesson 2 – Music Appreciation!!!

Well music appreciation simply is the ability to enjoy different types of music: different music is normally classified under certain genres, and to an extent appreciating different genres involves some history lessons to explain why people of a certain era like the music that they do.

It NO secret that i LOVE 80z music! Because i come from an 80z era, where music was focal in ones life. Yes in Africa moreover music is central to ones life, it is pervasive at weddings, births, deaths, and almost every celebration that you can think of, even to the extent that when people ‘strike’, they dance in the street. However 80z music takes me back to a NOSTALGIC time when you felt SAFE, when you had a few cents in your pocket yet the entertainment lasted longer than 100 times its value today, when you experienced your first love and your first break up, when the worst you would get was a blue eye from a fight, and when you heard that song on Radio or the hottest club in town for the very first time; it turned your world upside down. Yes the clothing was really bad, laughable today and even the hairstyles had a lot to be desired, but I still look back with joy!

So now that has set the scene, what genre of music predominantly molded me and so many of my 80z generation? Not so simple to explain ……. but let’s try and understand a few of the genres first: the array of ’80s musical genres and styles (pop, rock, reggae, hip hop etc..) may be exhaustive, but the ones most closely tied to my PERSONAL choices would be:

Soul: Soul for me was divided into Commercial and British soul: commercial 80z is the hits of the 80z, the tracks that everyone knew from your top 10 radio, tv and billboard magazines. British soul as it name implies is music from Britain; sounds silly yes, but most soul was typically from the USA, and British soul had a different feel to it; built on US soul but with a kinda reggae feel largely influenced by the large British Caribbean / African population; you knew it immediately to heard it … early groups set the tone such as Style Council and later perfected by groups such as Loose Ends!

Funk: Funk is a very distinct style of music based on R&B that reached its height in popularity from the late late 1970s, but was available in the early 80z. One of the most distinctive features of funk music is the role played by bass guitar, The strong bassline is primarily what separates Funk from soul and other forms of music; the basic idea of funk was to create as intense a groove as possible. Click here for a complete defination of Funk.

Rare Groove: The term was coined by British DJ Norman Jay after his “The Original Rare Groove Show” on pirate radio station Kiss 94 FM. Rare groove (‘Boogie’ as its interchangeably known in Europe) is really very hard to source or relatively obscure soul music, typified by a thumping drum beat accompanied by a synthesising bassline, and relatively good (or bad) singing. It’s not everyone’s forte, it is more for the 80z connoisseurs.

Electro: I’m not defining this one, in essence its easy ….. if you did break dancing, this was the background music that you danced to.

So to put it together; I did talk about the science of Mixing in the 80z Club Mix, but in order to make it an ART, something that is pleasurable to the ear and the ‘soul’, YOU HAVE TO KNOW YOUR MUSIC !

I argue with those that are from the 60z and 70z era; but to me In many ways, the musical genres during the 1980s were a culmination of perfecting 60z and 70z music, and redefining the way many bands and artists made new music and it still continues to influence music today …

On my 80z club mix vol1, MixSensei promised to follow up on his next mix (80z club mix vol 3) with Lesson 2 ndash; Music Appreciation!!!

Well music appreciation simply is the ability to enjoy different types of music: different musicnbsp;is normally classified under certain genres, and to an extentnbsp;appreciating different genresnbsp;involves somenbsp;history lessons to explain why people of a certain era like the music that they do.

It NO secret that i LOVE 80z music! Because i come from an 80z era, where music was focal in ones life. Yes in Africa moreover music is central to ones life, it is pervasive at weddings, births, deaths, and almost every celebration that you can think of, even to the extent that when people 'strike', they dance in the street. However 80z music takesnbsp;me back to a NOSTALGIC time when you felt SAFE, when you had a few cents in your pocket yet the entertainment lasted longer than 100 times its value today, when you experienced your first love and your first break up, when the worst you would get was a blue eye from a fight, and when you heard that song on Radio or the hottest club in town for the very first time; itnbsp;turned your world upside down. Yes the clothing was really bad, laughable today and even the hairstyles had a lot to be desired, but I still look back with joy!

So now that has set the scene, what genre of musicnbsp;predominantly molded me and so many ofnbsp;my 80z generation? Not so simple to explain ....... but letrsquo;s try and understand a few of the genres first: the array of '80s musicalnbsp;genres and styles (pop, rock, reggae, hip hop etc..) may be exhaustive, but the ones most closely tied to my PERSONAL choices would be:

nbsp;Soul: Soul fornbsp;menbsp;was divided into Commercial and British soul: commercial 80z is the hits of the 80z,nbsp;the tracks that everyone knew from your top 10 radio, tv and billboard magazines.nbsp;British soul as it name implies is music fromnbsp;Britain; soundsnbsp;silly yes, but most soul was typically from the USA, and British soul had a different feel to it; built on US soul but with a kinda reggae feelnbsp;largely influenced by the large British Caribbean / African population;nbsp;nbsp;you knew it immediately to heard it ...nbsp;earlynbsp;groups set the tone such as Style Council and later perfected by groups such as Loose Ends!nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;

Funk: Funk is a very distinct style of music based on R#38;B that reached its height in popularity from the latenbsp;late 1970s, but was available in the early 80z. One of the most distinctive features of funk music is the role played by bass guitar, The strong bassline is primarily what separates Funk fromnbsp;soul and other forms of music;nbsp; the basic idea of funk was to create as intense a groove as possible. Click here for a complete defination of Funk.

Rare Groove: The term was coined by British DJ Norman Jaynbsp;after his "The Original Rare Groove Show" on pirate radio station Kiss 94 FM.nbsp;Rare groovenbsp;('Boogie' as its interchangeably kno...</itunes:summary>
